Quake Fortress
There are several versions of Quake Fortress and download links for some of these mods are found in the TFX Forums. The original TeamFortress was written as an add-on 'mod' for Quake and released as freeware on August 24, 1996. The first release for QuakeWorld (v2.0) came on December 22, 1996. It was sufficiently successful that the team formed TeamFortress Software to develop Team Fortress 2 as a commercial mod for Quake II.
Fortress Evolution for Quake III Arena was intended to create a very close replica of the original QWTF, but was canceled and last released as an alpha build. It has however recently returned as a standalone mod built upon Evolution Q3, but is completely different.
Then there was a mod titled Q3F, for Quake III Fortress, was developed for Quake III Arena by Splashdamage, and while it was praised for its accuracy in preserving the QWTF gameplay, it never saw a huge following. There were several betas in Q3F until it was changed completely with Q3F2.0 with 2.3 being the final version.
In December of 2006 a member (DHA) and the now closed PlanetTFX site launched Quake 3 Fortress Xtreme (Q3FX) which was Q3F beta 1H modded and fixed. A few bug fixes along with a huge amount of added maps made Q3FX a great game, but the mod never caught on and the lack of support for the game resulted in a loss of the servers. Wolfstuff is still hosting a Q3FX server if you want to check it out. PlanetTFX was closed due to personal issues with the staff, but Johnny Mullet (aka Mullet Man) re-opened the site as TeamFortressXtreme.com and plans on uniting the entire community of Fortress gamers in one place.
Finally, the latest Fortress mod for Quake is Quake 4 Fortress for Quake 4. Production on Q4F has ceased, however there is a Q4F modification in development by XavioR (aka avirox) called Quake 4 Fortress X (Q4FX) which addresses several of the incomplete factors of Q4F. Q4F was released as an Alpha along with the source code.
Today you can also find "Free Builds" from the older Quake Fortress games like zelTF. There are at least 3 different versions of TF for QW; Teamfortress 2.9, OzTF and megaTF. TF 2.9 is popular in Scandinavia, Portugal and in Russia. OzTF in New Amsterdam, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil all though Brazilians play 2.9 too. QWTF is the original Fortress game.
